Harmonic Discord

Harmonic Discord, Michael N. Johns, 10/7/2015

You used to kiss with all your heart, whenever you kissed me,
The score of life seemed beautiful, and blessed with harmony,
Then there were times, and life’s events, I sometimes felt ignored,
But I loved you, we muddled through occasional discord,
Those kisses changed over time, you thought I wouldn’t notice,
Our music, despite busy notes, decrescendoed in its’ bliss,
I missed the fire and tried to kindle romance, but I failed,
Somewhere your expectations were impossibly detailed,
Now you’ve become mechanical, as we play the days’ score,
What can I do to win you back, the music to restore?
You say “yes,” but your kiss says “no,” I take a measured rest,
I want the symphony, but hear a triangle at best,
I’ve offered you my heart, and all I am, and I want more.
You say that we’re ok, but I hate harmonic discord.

I Don’t Want To Ask Why

Your favorite color was purple,
Because “there’s no rhyme for that.”
Your humor was a sure pull,
My heart stepped right into your trap,

You were the violet
Crushed by the heel,
I asked the universe,
Don’t make me feel
There was something to be done,
So you could be saved,
Any explanation,
Or something to say,
I
Don’t want to ask why.

I was caught watching your stormy life,
Hating it, waiting for the end of your ordeal,
Under his sick psychological knife,
Wishing for your freedom to be real,

But You were the violet
Crushed by the heel.
I asked the universe,
Don’t make me feel
There was something to be done,
So you could be saved,
Some explanation,
Or something to say,
I
Don’t want to ask why.

But I want to know
Why we couldn’t be free
Why we couldn’t escape
from our chained history
Why I loved you so
I want to know
Why my heart has a hole,
Why was the answer, “no?”

And why?

Why

You were the violet
Crushed by the heel
I asked the universe,
Don’t make me feel
There was something to be done,
So you could be saved,
Some explanation,
Or something to say,
But I
Don’t want to ask why.

“Thy Adam, …The Fallen Angel”

“Thy Adam, …The Fallen Angel”

Desperate, I tried to put a stitch in time,
Polarized, charged, to resurrect
The picture I had of us, perfect.
Alas, I should have put in nine,
Or nine thousand, nine hundred ninety nine,
With jewels and amperage to restart
Your damned, dead, ungrateful, hateful heart.
Even if my own very life were forfeit,
It would be a gift deemed less than adequate.
Michael N. Johns, 10/5/2015

This piece was inspired by a quote from Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein: “I ought to be thy Adam; but I am rather the fallen angel, whom thou drivest from joy for no misdeed.”

Happily Ever After

Why are all the happy endings broken?
Women blame men blaming women,
Is it just possible we’re not “in love;”
Using each other instead of
A true commitment to weather the storms?
Breakup, a relational norm;
Romance, reality, in collision,
Lost, the original vision
“Once upon a time” called “love at first sight.”

“And they lived happily ever after,”
She loved him truly loving her,
Both tried to fulfill their spouses’ wishes,
Trouble came as trouble visits,
Which still happens after the dragon’s slain,
They chose not to ride off in vain,
Into the sunset, but to keep striving,
Which is how it can last, thriving:
Clinging to each other with all their might.

Solstice at Stonehenge

Solstice at Stonehenge, Michael N. Johns, 6/22/2015

We rang the stones to celebrate,
As Solstice came again,
Our dancing, wild and daring fate-
Clouds brought hard summer rains,

We rang the stones out anyway,
For life, for the sun’s rays,
The wind and rain joined as we sang
Our hymns of thunderous praise,

Each person there a welcome friend,
We knew the music well,
All sad and wet at concert’s end
To leave when evening fell.

Superhero’s Symphony

Superhero’s Symphony, Michael N. Johns, 06/09/2015

I stormed the prison walls at night.
I overcame the guards by stealth,
Seized the keys of your prison cell,
And thus, freed, you and I took flight.

If I were a super hero,
Bursting your bonds to rescue you,
This little story might be true.
Alas, it’s just a metaphor.

In truth I only wish it were,
So I could be your super man,
Your heart, the prize, and I its’ fan,
I labored, played my overture,

And won, I thought. Your heart was mine.
Our symphony had just begun,
The staves promised the sweetest run…
I played wrong notes on the next line.

“Stop the music, back to the cue,
Where’s the hero who won my heart?”
Tired, and headed back to the start,
Trudging slower, trying to get through,

It’s not easy, and you tease me,
Make me change, try, try again,
If I could be your super man,
I would just know, be strong, succeed,

Looking back I clearly can see
My heart’s locked in your prison cell
I don’t want out, the truth to tell
But I wish you’d come rescue me.

The Waiting

The Waiting, 5/10/15, Michael N. Johns

We’ve all heard of Moses and Israel, crossing the red sea,
We’ve all heard of Daniel, how his friends faced the fiery heat,
We’re in the darkest night, striving to follow, it’s hard to see You.
Waiting and watching, fearing Your timing, Are Your promises true?

Let Your glory cover the heavens!  Let Your praises fill the earth!
Let our pounding hearts be silent before You, held in awe of Your worth!
Though we fear what we see,
Help us wait patiently,
Your promises are true.
Your promises are true.
Help us to trust in You.

We all see the evil in the world just growing: Wars, and no harmony
We all see the storms, earthquakes and wind blowing.  Why do You watch silently?
We’re in the darkest night, our prayers feel hollow, it’s hard to see You.

We are weak!  Strengthen us!
We’ve fallen! Raise us up!
Come save Your children, O God!

Though we fear what we see,
Help us wait patiently,
Your promises are true.
Your promises are true.
Help us to trust in You.
